Biography
Hailed by Strad Magazine for his "effortless, envy-provoking technique… sweet tone, brilliant expression, and grand style," Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Concertmaster Michael Ludwig has appeared as soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra collaborating with such conductors as Sir Georg Solti, JoAnn Falletta, Joseph Silverstein and John Williams. Upcoming highlights include the world premiere of a violin concerto written for him by American composer Daron Hagen, as well as performances in Portugal, Lithuania, Japan, Mexico, the Czech Republic and throughout the United States. Michael Ludwig's recording of the Bruch Scottish Fantasy with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will be released this fall on the Hampton Roads Classics label and his growing discography will soon include the addition of the Dohnanyi Violin Concertos with the Royal Scottish National Symphony, the Corigliano Violin Concerto with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Piano Trio of Marcel Tyberg, all to be issued by NAXOS.
Sought after as a chamber musician, Mr. Ludwig has shared the stage with numerous acclaimed artists, such as Christoph Eschenbach, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Yefim Bronfman, Sarah Chang, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. His media credits include live radio broadcasts at WRTI (Philadelphia) and WAMC (Albany, NY). He was featured on Bulgarian National Radio and Balkan Bulgarian Television. As a producer, Mr. Ludwig has been nominated for a Mid Atlantic Emmy Award nomination.He has served as the artistic producer of The Philadelphia Orchestra's national radio broadcasts, syndicated by the WFMT Fine Arts Network in Chicago.
In addition to his active performance and recording schedule, Mr. Ludwig provides master classes around the world and has held faculty positions at Rowan University and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, as well as the School of Orchestral Studies in Saratoga Springs, NY and the National Youth Orchestra Festival. He has also held the appointment of Sterne Virtuoso Artist-in-Residence at Skidmore College. He has served as a member of the board of directors of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, and is currently a member of the Artistic Advisory Board for Access to Art, Inc.
Michael performs on a violin made in the late 1700's by the Cremonese master Lorenzo Storioni and a Dominique Peccatte bow.
An aspiring conductor, Mr. Ludwig has pursued studies with the renowned conductor and pedagogue Gustav Meier. In 2003, he was a conducting fellow at the Conductors Institute of South Carolina and participated in the International Conductors Workshop in Sofia, Bulgaria. He serves as the Associate Conductor of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra. Since 2004, he has been a visiting conductor at the Luzerne Music Center. In April of 2005, Michael conducted the Skidmore College Orchestra. He returned to Sofia, Bulgaria in August '05 to participate in the International Conductors Workshop, as well as appear as violin soloist in the Dvorak Violin Concerto and Romance.
