Program for PreK- to Grade 2: Calculating Music

How many musicians does it take to make the great, full sound of a symphony Orchestra? Come help Maestro Franz add and subtract musicians until we find the perfect number of musicians. Calculating Music, in alignment with New York State Standards, is a 35 minute concert that will help the young student be able to see the orchestra as a manipulative, identify sound differences between four instrument families, explore variations in sound based on number of musicians involved and compare numbers of musicians per piece.

Program for Grades 3-6: Reading and Music

Join us as we illuminate the stories of both fictional and non-fictionalwomen with music. Highlighting Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt, we will use reading strategies like activating background knowledge, drawing inferences and creating mental images to help your students develop active listening skills and prepare for their reading assignments in class. The concert will also focus on the contribution of women composers Jennifer Higdon and Libby Larsen including a word premiere of Fanfare:Sizzle by Ms. Larsen.

Middle and High School Program: Industrial Revolution's Effect on Art and Music

Have you ever wondered how the industrial revolution affected the orchestra? With slides of great impressionistic masterpieces and music by Debussy, Honegger and american composer, Jenifer Higdon, we will put the Industrial Revolution in context, both in the United States and abroad.

Program for High School Students: Coffee Concerts

The Friday Morning Coffee Concertsare perfect for high school and college students. These concerts are a relaxed way to introduce students to a full BPO concert. All Coffee Concerts befin at 10:30 am.

Wendy's Family Concerts and Bank of America Instrument Zoo
Our one-hour Wendy's Family Concerts are preceded by the Bank of America Instrument Zoo. McClellan Music and Buffalo Suzuki Strings bring instruments for kids to try out, while local high-school students usually demonstrate these instruments making this a truly intergenerational event. All concerts start at 2:30 pm. This year's events are listed below.

Programs to Bring Students to Concerts
NOCO Community Nights allows various ensembles from public and private schools (fourth grade and up) to perform in the Mary Seaton Room prior to over twenty BPO concerts, for which these students receive free tickets.

Symphony Scholars is sponsored by Bodil and George Gellman and has been running for over a decade. This program provides free tickets to Classical concerts and targeted lessons delivered by BPO musicians to selected urban Buffalo High School Students.

Supporting Young Musicians
The Side-by-Side Concert sponsored by Gibraltar Industries showcases accomplished young musicians from the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra who perform side by side with BPO musicians in a special concert.

Composer's Forum is an annual event that is open to the public and provides college and university composers the opportunity to hear their compositions performed by the BPO with valuable feedback from musicians and the conductor.

Master Class features in-depth music sessions where an outstanding guest artist coaches promising young artists. Check back often for updates.

Awards and Scholarships
The BPO Volunteer Foundation presents The Eleanor V. Millonzi Scholarship annually to high school seniors who plan to major in music in college.

The BPO-Erie County Music Educators Association (ECMEA) Awards for Excellence in Music Education, recognizes outstanding achievement by public school teachers.

The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation Initiative provides free access to our education concerts and other assistance for under-funded urban and rural schools.

In addition to numerous community concerts across Western New York, the BPO has played a special Christmas concert for more than 20 years at St. Mary's School for the Deaf. We are always taking on new partnerships, including a continuing three-year mentorship at Gaskill Middle School, and education concerts in Lockport.

Adult Education
The BPO will continue with its popular pre-concert lectures and post-concert discussions to all attendees at Classical subscription concerts (sponsored by Uniland Development). The Philharmonic will continue with BPOvation adult lecture series with Maestro Paul Ferington. These courses are designed to increase audiences' understanding and enjoyment of classical music. Additional BPO education outreach concerts include Coffee Concerts, which are held on Friday mornings, Behind the Scenes with the BPO, where participants attend a rehearsal and meet with the guest artist and Family Concerts, especially designed as a family experience.
