Buffalo, NY- The Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo will present The Rite of Spring with Richmond Ballet and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 7:30pm in the Mainstage Theatre, located at the Center for the Arts, North Campus. The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky’s enduring and influential masterwork sent shockwaves through the worlds of music and dance when it premiered in Paris in 1913. JoAnn Falletta conducts the Buffalo Philharmonic for this program which also includes the Overture to The Magic Flute (Mozart) and Mozartiana (Balanchine, Tchaikovsky). This performance will also mark the Western New York premiere of Richmond Ballet, The State Ballet of Virginia.

Thomas Burrows, Executive Director of the Center for the Arts and Daniel Hart, BPO Executive Director have been seeking a special program in which the organizations could collaborate, and The Rite of Spring soon emerged as an ideal fit. Mr. Hart stated, “In bringing together an outstanding dance company from outside the region with Western New York’s resident professional orchestra, this performance is symbolic of the Center for the Arts’ importance to Western New York’s cultural scene. The University at Buffalo has been an important partner for the Buffalo Philharmonic, and with this performance, we celebrate both the Center’s 20th anniversary and the continuance of this partnership.”

Last year marked the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, as well as the 30th anniversary of Richmond Ballet. BPO Music Director JoAnn Falletta conducted the Virginia Symphony Orchestra for a special performance of the work with the Richmond Ballet and was moved to bring the event to Buffalo. Maestro Falletta stated, “More than a hundred years after its premiere, Stravinsky’s seminal Rite of Spring ballet retains its aura of innovation. The BPO is proud to work with the Richmond Ballet, making its debut in Western New York, in bringing this important work to the area.” Mr. Burrows adds, “It is a spirit of collaboration and community that drives the Center for the Arts, as well as a desire to present unique and important events of excellence for Western New York. It will be a pleasure to welcome these two fine organizations to the Center to celebrate our anniversary.”

The piece will feature the choreography created by Salvatore Aiello in 1993. In his vision of the historic ballet, Aiello invented a primitive society to explore the myth of earth and life, imagining a chosen group of women pampered, protected and prepared for the ultimate offering to the gods. The fluid movement of the dancers builds with the music to the final shattering scene.
