The djembe is a goblet drum that originated in West Africa and has since become popular worldwide. Drums and rhythm are central in African culture and music, and have been used for centuries as a tool for communication, in celebration, and to mark significant events. Traditionally, the shell of the instrument is covered by a membrane of rawhide, usually derived from cow or goat.
