Rababa
Country of Origin: Egypt
Instrument Family: String
The rababa is one of the oldest string instruments dating as far back as the 8th century. It was spread via Islamic trading routes over much of North Africa, the Middle East, parts of Europe, and the Far East. The rababa typically consists of a small, rounded body, the front of which is covered in a membrane such as parchment or sheepskin. It has a long neck with 1 to 3 strings. The bowed variety often has a spike at the bottom to rest on the ground, and the bow is usually more curved than that of the violin.
