Doctors of the World with the BPO

July 9-13, 2018
Kleinhans Music Hall

Doctors from around the world will once again be coming to Buffalo for a five day side-by-side experience in the beautiful and historic Kleinhans Music Hall.  Performing Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Wagner’s Three Dances from Meistersinger and Strauss’ Don Juan under the direction of acclaimed music director JoAnn Falletta, all participants will work with BPO musicians throughout the week in preparation for the culminating performance on July 13 at Kleinhans.

This is our third partnership with members of the World Doctors Orchestra.  In 2014 and again in 2016 we welcomed doctors from all over the United States as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Costa Rica, South Africa, Japan and Taiwan. The BPO is proud to partner with the Oishei Children’s Hospital to bring the medical community together through music and benefit our own local hospital in the process. Participants will have the opportunity to play for patients at the new Hospital as part of their experience.

We currently have 47 confirmed participants, but we still have space in the violin, viola and double bass sections, as well as percussion, harp and one French horn to complete that section.  If you are interested, please contact Robin Parkinson, at rparkinson@bpo.org.

Unique side-by-side experience:

The Buffimg_2385alo Philharmonic Orchestra hosts a five day side-by-side experience in the beautiful, historic (and newly renovated!) Kleinhans Music Hall.  Under the direction of acclaimed music director JoAnn Falletta, participants join the musicians of the BPO in rehearsals, coachings and a final culminating performance.

Chamber music:

In addition to the orchestra experience, the week includes immersion in chamber music as well.  Chamber groups are formed by the BPO and have access to BPO musician coaches throughout the week.  Chamber groups wishing to perform has the opportunity to do so at a casual chamber concert at Kleinhans.

Niagara Falls and beyond:

on-the-boatSummer is a beautiful time to be in Western New York.  Opportunities to explore the Buffalo/Niagara region are available for participants to take part.  The area has incredible offerings for visitors such as beautiful Niagara Falls, picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries, sailing on Lake Erie, Frank Lloyd Wright house tours, many fantastic restaurants and more.  Time is built into the schedule to allow for exploration.  Please see www.visitbuffaloniagara.com for more details on the area.

testimonials from past participants:

clarinet-small-web“An excellent opportunity to learn from and perform with members of a top-notch orchestra. Highly recommended!”

“This was a superb experience with advanced repertoire, that was well worth the cost in terms of value received, particularly when compared to many other music camps. Transportation, scheduling, and events were well-organized and there was excellent communication all week. The Buffalo Philharmonic musicians and staff were very welcoming and helpful, and we had a clear sense that they enjoyed working with us.”

“A relaxing, exciting, and satisfying experience indulging in what is my passion. Being away from the pressures of practicing medicine, I had the unforgettable experience of playing along side these pros who could not have been more supportive.”

“JoAnn and the BPO staff made me feel like a member of their musical family. Playing within this outstanding orchestra gave me insight as to what it takes to be on a musical front line. The experience only adds to the enjoyment of music.”

“Our coach was a great mentor: patient and encouraging.  Put me at ease.”

“I loved the side-by-side program. The musicians and staff could not have been more supportive. The BPO really feels like a learning organization, and working with amateurs is part of their DNA.”
