Guitarist from Russia sweeps all prizes in 2016 JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Following tonight’s final round performance with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Anton Baranov of Russia won first place in the seventh biennial JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition. He was also selected as the Audience Favorite and the Musicians Choice.

Eight classical guitarists, representing seven nations, competed throughout the past week in the competition, presented by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and WNED | WBFO.

Baranov will receive a solo concert at the prestigious series Incontri Musicali, (Musical Encounter) in Milan, Italy in 2017 along with a $10,000 cash prize, national and international broadcast exposure, a recording contract with Fleur de Son, and a return engagement with the BPO.

Baranov is 32 years old. He is the winner of the 2013 Guitar Foundation of America Competition. He has recorded on the Naxos and the Contrastes Records label, and is also a professor at Saint-Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, from which he graduated in 2010.

Each competitor performed a concerto and also a solo work of his choice. His concerto this evening was Concierto Del Sur by Ponce.

Andras Csaki of Hungary placed second, and received a $3,000 prize. Alec Holcomb of the United States took third place and a $1,500 prize.

Buffalo-based Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio, a well-known international chamber ensemble duo, are the Competition’s artistic directors. In addition to Castellani and Andriaccio, the live competitions were judged by Antigoni Goni; Jeff Cogan; Donald Crockett; Mark Delpriora; and Jeffrey McFadden.

Founded in 2004 and organized by WNED ǀ WBFO and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the competition is one of the foremost musical events in the world and the first concerto competition for classical guitarists.
