The snare drum evolved from a type of drum that was strapped over the right shoulder of Swiss foot soldiers. They used the drum to send signals to each other when out on the field. Today, sound is produced through the vibration of snares, which are metal wires stretched tight against the underside of the drum. A player uses sticks to strike the top of the drum, thus causing the snares to vibrate and produce a cracking sound.
