Music for Youth: Instruments of the World – Sousaphone

Sousaphone

State of Origin: Pennsylvania, USA
Instrument Family: Brass

The first sousaphone was built at the request of the well-known march composer John Philip Sousa, who sought a tuba-like instrument that would project sounds up and over the band as they marched. It is a large bass tuba with a forward-facing bell. To play the sousaphone, you stand inside its circular tube, resting the instrument on your left shoulder.
