Patriotic Pops

The BPO’s Patriotic Pops concert is an annual Memorial Day weekend tradition that pays tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of America’s military personnel. Conducted by Ron Spigelman and featuring the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, this concert is a stirring salute to the spirit of America, highlighting the music that has defined and celebrated the country’s values over the centuries. From the rousing marches of John Philip Sousa to the poignant strains of “America the Beautiful,” the program is designed to inspire and uplift, reminding us of the enduring ideals for which so many have served. Join us for this moment of reflection, appreciation, and patriotic pride, as we honor those who have dedicated themselves to our nation’s defense.

As the first place-winner of the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition and a semi-finalist in the American Traditions Competition, jazz vocalist Sara Jones has toured 49 states and performed in numerous concert halls across the country.
Jones has performed as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and Ravinia Festival Orchestra under the batons of Emil de Cou and Erich Kunzel, and on the Esplanade with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra. In the Baltimore-Washington area, Jones was a featured vocalist with the Jazz Ambassadors at the Hippodrome Theater, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Strathmore Mansion, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Jones, who began her musical career as a pianist, received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and her Master of Music in Piano Accompanying at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. After graduation, she chose to pursue a professional vocal career with the Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band, where she served for six years. Now a civilian, Jones maintains an active performing schedule and has recently released her debut CD, Daydream A Little, on Petite Musique Records. A collection of beloved jazz standards and bossa novas, it features Jones and major Brazilian jazz group, Trio da Paz.
A former educator, Jones was a professor at Towson University where she taught Jazz and Commercial Voice and directed the Towson Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Recent engagements for Jones include a performance by the Sara Jones Trio at the 2024 Monterey Jazz Festival and a solo performance with the Columbia Orchestra.
Lamont Glover Sr. is a proud Buffalo native and graduate of Seneca Vocational High School. In 1965, he performed as a first violinist with the NY state-wide band at Kleinhans Music Hall – an accomplishment that set the stage for a lifelong dedication to music.
Mr. Glover is also known for his vocal talents as a tenor soloist with The Royal Serenaders Male Chorus. Founded in 1946, the Royal Serenaders performed in Buffalo for over 70 years. Mr. Glover’s vocals were highlighted in many of their performances in the ‘80s and ‘90s under the direction of Roy Mathis.
