Folklore & Fantasy

Menacing timpani rolls set the tone for Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide, a deceivingly upbeat narration of a grim story of family rivalries. The piece oscillates between moments of solemnity, intense dramatic contrasts, and more playful themes that all come to a close with a signature Rossini ending of peak movement and excitement. Bela Bartók’s Dance Suite follows, featuring five original Hungarian folk soundscapes composed for the 50th anniversary of the merging of Buda and Pest, which offers a tonally rich experience and vibrant musical journey through a synthesis of Western and Eastern musical tradition. The pinnacle piece of the concert also draws from folk influences—Chopin’s poetic Piano Concerto No. 1 stands as a sparkling showcase of virtuosity and is artfully brought to the stage by soloist Maxim Lando.
