The BPO has embarked on the Crescendo Campaign to build a sustainable endowment that is five times our annual operating budget of $11.4 million, an orchestra industry standard. To date, we have raised over $26.6 million of our overall $30 million goal. A sustainable funding model combined with a robust endowment will guarantee our ability to provide the world-class music and education programs that our community has come to love and expect.
A gift to the Crescendo Campaign will strengthen Buffalo’s musical movement and help ensure that our BPO will play on for generations to come.
- $30 million overall goal to increase our endowment, provide short-term operating costs and enhance our planned giving program, the Musical Heritage Society.
- $50 million endowment or five times our operating budget, to provide an annual return of $2.5 million of our $11.4 million annual budget.
- Establish $10 million Next Generation Education Fund to invest in and expand our education programs in perpetuity.

Next Generation Education Fund
Education continues to be central to the orchestra’s mission, made possible through generous annual donations and significant investment from the BPO. This season, we will serve a record 50,000 students and children, including all Buffalo Public School students from grades K-6.
All too often, despite the innumerable research demonstrating the positive lifelong benefits of music education, arts education and field trip funds are the first to be cut from school budgets. The BPO invests almost $1.2 million annually in its education programs, with income from tickets and grants covering only half the expenses. As one of its primary goals, the Crescendo Campaign looks to designate $10 million to establish the Next Generation Education Fund. These newly endowed funds will support key growth strategies for our education programs and allow us to broaden our reach throughout the region.
The $1,000,000 Challenge
The Tower Family Fund jump-started the Next Generation Education Fund through a $1 million dollar-for-dollar match challenge, providing great momentum to reach our overall goal of $10 million. To date, we have raised over $3.5 million towards this effort!
