Music for Youth: Instruments of the World – Banjo

Banjo

State of Origin: West Virginia, USA
Instrument Family: String

The five-string banjo has a circular body, long fingerboard, and a stretched plastic, tambourine-shaped belly. It is played by plucking the strings with one’s fingers or with a plectrum, or pick. It is said to have originated from an instrument used by West African enslaved people who brought the instrument with them to America.
