An afoxé is a Brazilian instrument made of a gourd wrapped in a net of beads that makes a loud, sharp noise when shaken. It is similar to the African sekere, only smaller. Knowledge of the sekere was likely carried by West African enslaved peoples to South America and altered with available materials such as gourds and coconut seeds, thus becoming the afoxé.
