BPS Music for Youth: Instruments of the World – African Horn Trumpet

African Horn Trumpet

Country of Origin: Ghana
Instrument Family: Brass

An African horn trumpet may be made from the horn of most any animal, such as elephant tusks or a cow horns. They are side-blown in impressive one-note blasts and are used to convey messages, to announce arrivals or proceedings, as well as for musical events. Though not actually made of brass, these traditional instruments mimic sounds produced by modern brass trumpets and trombones.
